Varsity Cup Showcase Finalists
Greater Kingston Jr Gaels Bantam 2005’s traveled to Potsdam, NY, to compete in the Varsity Cup Showcase.


 Games were hosted at the historic Cheel Arena, home of the Clarkson University Golden Knights NCAA D1 hockey program, and Maxcy Hall Arena, home to the NCAA D3 Potsdam University Bears.   Friday November 1st saw the GK Bantams play two games to kick off round robin play. Game 1 featured GK facing the Ottawa Valley Titans. It was a tight checking game that resulted in a 3-2 contest in favour of the GK Jr Gaels against a rugged Ottawa team. Game 2 versus the North York Rangers ended in a 3-1 result to move the Gaels to a 2-0 record after day 1 of round robin play.   Saturday, November 2nd also featured two games for the Bantam Gaels who looked to continue their strong play in Potsdam, NY. Game 3 versus the Utica Jr Comets was a chance for GK to continue their perfect tournament play. The boys would do just that as they skated to a 8-0 victory and secure their spot atop the tournament standings. Game 4 was a spirited tilt against the regular season rival North Central Predators. The match ended in a 1-1 draw that gave GK 7pts on the tournament and a spot into the semi finals.   Sunday, November 3rd, semi-final play saw #1 seed GK Jr Gaels playing #4 seed North Central Predators. GK came out strong and showed why they were the #1 seed as the game concluded in a 3-1 Win to punch their ticket to the Varsity Cup Showcase Finals.   In the Championship game The Jr Gales were matched up against another regular season rival Peterborough Petes who were able to push past Ottawa Valley 4-1 in their semi-final matchup. The Championship game began with a tight checking and fast style of play from both teams. The Petes were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first half of the game with great chances and saves coming from both sides. Some character and resiliency from the Jr Gaels saw them climb back to tie the game at 2-2 as they dominated play for the second half of the game. Peterborough got the go ahead goal to make the score 3-2 in the 3rd period which saw GK push hard in the final minutes of play but unable to get the equalizer. Final score ended as 3-2 in favour of Peterborough to conclude the Championship game of the Varsity Cup Showcase. Strong goaltending and play by the entire Bantam Jr Gales team contributed to their appearance in the Championship game with MVP honours for the GK Jr Gaels being awarded to Lance Brown.
